Regions, sectors & brands

Maps to: taxonomies

Every query is built on the BrandIndex taxonomy — the hierarchy that organises what can be measured. Understanding it is the first step to constructing any analysis or ranking.

The hierarchy

Region → Sector → Brand
(market) (category) (individual brand)
  • Region — a market, identified by a short code such as us or uk. Data is always scoped to a region.
  • Sector — a category within a region (e.g. "Supermarkets"), identified by a numeric sector_id. A brand's sector can differ between regions.
  • Brand — an individual brand within a sector, identified by a numeric brand_id.

The identifiers you need

To build a query you need the identifiers, which you obtain from the taxonomy catalogue endpoints:

IdentifierExampleHow to obtain
region"us"List regions
sector_id1List sectors in a region
brand_id1007List brands in a sector

These flow directly into a query's entity:

{ "region": "us", "sector_id": 1, "brand_id": 1007 }

Measuring one brand vs a whole category

An entity can be a single brand or a whole sector:

  • Single brand — one series for that brand.
  • Whole sector — the brands in the sector aggregated into one series. You can choose the mean (default) or the median (is_median: true) across the brands, and weighted (default) or unweighted (is_unweighted: true) data.

To get a separate series for every brand in a category (a league table), use an "all brands" expansion — see Custom sectors & industries.
